Problem solved. The WebMail Options window, Servers tab, lets you specify the port numbers for the POP, SMTP, and IMAP services.
At the bottom is a note that warns, "Some OS's block ports below 1024." I had been using port 110 for POP (the extension's default, I think). I changed this to 1100 here (and in Server Settings under Account Settings), and everything was back to normal!
