There is still a need for the extensions in some cases. Some users may
be behind office firewalls that prevent access to webmail sites, these
users can still access their mails using Thunderbird plus extension. I
make no comment on the wisdom of circumventing an employer's firewall in
this way.

I don't think you're going to get a resolution. Webmail is no longer
necessary to use TB for Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo Mail. You can
configure your accounts in TB without it.
