Yes. I was looking at the Postgres docs and it says that serial is
equivolent to typing out "integer DEFAULT nextval('tablename_colname_seq')
NOT NULL" and creating the sequence. Which now that I think of it perhaps
should be done manually?

The problem with "NOT NULL" is that it looks like you have to use "ALTER
columnname SET NOT NULL" Its the same with default, the default value
appears to be set with "ALTER columnname SET DEFAULT somevalue" instead of
"ALTER columnname TYPE sometype DEFAULT somevalue"
