 Thanks a lot Caveman. I think the answer is this PHP bug:

 * http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=41770

 Which was fixed in 5.2.4. So no SSL support in HttpSocket for <= PHP 5.2.3
 : /. The only way to do it would be curl, but that would be against the
 current idea behind HttpSocket (easy interface, 100% transparent request
 handling).
