Spoke to gwoo on IRC about this. He offered a suggestion to fix it:
In cake/libs/model.php , around line 401 there's :
{{{
if ($this->useTable !== false) {
$this->setDataSource($ds);
}}}
Add the line '$this->useDbConfig = $ds' to give :
{{{
if ($this->useTable !== false) {
$this->useDbConfig = $ds
$this->setDataSource($ds);
}}}
I have tested this and it seems to solve the problem.
