I'm closing this as worksforme for now.
Several libxslt and libxml2 updates were made recently that, in
combination, seem to have fixed the issue for some people - at least we
haven't received any reports of this problem lately.
As reported by !MrJeep above, XAMPP/Linux 1.6.6 exhibits the bug, whereas
1.6.6a doesn't. The XAMPP changelog says for 1.6.6a:
New version of libxslt (1.1.22)
We're suspecting that it was a combination of several libxml2 and libxslt
bugs that caused the problem under certain circumstances:
