Actually, an IFRAME *can* display images.   It uses the same handling
as when you put the URL or local path/file of an image file directly
into the browser (or right-click an image on a page and choose 'view
image' from the popup menu).

Thus, without changing the BookmarkViewTemplate, you can simply enter
a URL or path/file for any image into the slice table of a 'bookmark'
tiddler and it *will* be displayed within the IFRAME when the tiddler
is rendered.
