When you import a tiddler from another TW (Import is available in the backstage area), check mark the box next to "Keep these tiddlers linked to this server so that you can synchronize subsequent changes".
Then later down the line when you decide to tell them they need to synchronize that tiddler with your new data, they will have to click on the 'sync' button in the backstage area, and then click the box next to the tiddlers they want to update with your changes, followed by the 'sync' button at the bottom of the section. This will over write what ever is in the tiddler, so what you want to do is have the students keep their notes in a tiddler that is tagged with the parent tiddlers title. Example: A tiddler titled "Cow" as the parent, and the student titles his note "Milk" and tags it "Cow". The "Cow" tiddler will show that there is a connection between Milk & Cow. A really good example of this is available at: http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/#TagglyTagging At that site there is also a plugin to add a button to the toolbar that creates a tiddler pre-tagged with the parent tiddler's title.
