This might not be a perfect solution, but until someone pops up with
the "blankspaceplugin" you could use the comment symbols: /% %/ ...
like this:

#  My item here /%

%/
# My second item here /%

%/
# My final item here


This will give you plenty of space, and do the numbering right, though
you will have to remember to put the matching set of /%...%/ in for
every item, and you will have to put up with the clutter of the /%...
%/.
