Reading your post, it sounds like you're still on 5.1.13. There were improvements in 5.1.20. I would suggest making a copy of your file and upgrading it to 5.1.21.
It's really hard to diagnose at a distance. But you shouldn't be having serious problems with only 800 tiddlers and 8megs on *all* platforms. Good luck!
