Not sure if this helps but the _canonical_uri field is not a default field. I wonder if you have to add it manually before you run your script, otherwise nothing runs after that command which seems to be what you are describing. I kind of doubt it because I would think TW would add it with the setfield command but it's worth a look. Also, did you try to run each command separately outside of the script and it worked that way?
