Solved it. To my surprise, no escaperegexp is needed, i.e:
<$set name=closures filter="[{!!widgetclosure}]"
{{{ mystring +[regexp<closures>] }}}
...is enough when widgetclosure: />|</$
No need to escape e.g the / characters. Convenient (...but how can this
possibly work?)
