The Stories plugin was specifically hobbled together for Stroll, so you're going to struggle to get it working with other layouts without doing some significant CSS tweaking. The CSS is in $:/_sq/Stories/Stories.css and I'll warn you now that it mixes wikitext and CSS and is not easy to wrap one's head around.
The current page layout of TiddlyWiki does not lend itself well to flexible number of columns or column sizes. There is a plan to introduce an alternative flexbox based layout in the near future, at which point I will probably rewrite the plugin.
