To be fair, it's not abandoning wikitext, TW5 uses wikitext in exactly the same way as current TiddlyWiki, as I've detailed in [twdev]. But it offers the additional option of keeping tiddlers in HTML so that the WYSIWYG editor can be used. So it's an additional choice, not a reduction in choices as I think you're presenting it. The same macros can be used in wikitext and HTML. The incompatibility of plugins isn't directly related to the addition of HTML features; it's more driven by the need to sort out TiddlyWiki's APIs (which are confusing and poorly documented in places), and the desire to support features that can't easily be retrofitted into classic TiddlyWiki.
