what I *don't* want to happen is the the bracketed term [...] to be
broken up. It like it to read all on the same line
I'm not sure I fully understand your issue, but if you use a
non-breaking instead of a regular space, the browser will not insert a
line break at that point:
lorem ipsum foo bar dolor sit amet
vs.
lorem ipsum foo bar dolor sit amet
