That is correct. The default behaviour is that the backstage bar is visible when you first visit a space, which is different than classic TiddlyWiki. The main motivation for the change was that we saw the function of the backstage area changing from a kind of emergency escape hatch in TiddlyWiki, to a more conventional root menu in TiddlySpace, and so we wanted to make it a little more prominent and easier to access. We also wanted to keep the login and membership status of the user visible by default. We looked to Wordpress and a few other services for inspiration: once you've logged in to a Wordpress server then you'll see the page toolbar on each blog that visited across the server.
