Funnily enough, I just went to the group home page and, as an administrator, got this message in red:
"Google Groups will no longer be supporting the Welcome Message feature. Starting January 13, you won't be able to edit your welcome messages, but you will still be able to view and download the existing content. See this announcement for more information and other options for storing your content." It's no longer possible to modify or remove the existing message, as far as I could tell. Then there's a link to the "new google groups" at: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/tiddlywiki It looks like the new version also supports welcome messages, which is all a bit strange.
