I have around 900-1000 tiddlers in my tiddlywiki. >From my experience, TiddlyWiki is really good in read/browse/search mode.
If you start editing, then you can expect some pauses, as you are 'done' editing. I think it is also dependent on what plugins you have installed, of which, I have a few. Startup, on my " Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" under Gentoo linux using Firefox 3.6.15 is around 4 seconds.
