This shouldn't be the case. Would *should* happen is given a tiddlywiki called tiddlywiki.html if you open it and edit some tiddlers and hit save it will save back to tiddlywiki.html but also create "backups" with a name such as tiddlywiki.20110830.0727166230.html
You should only ever be used tiddlywiki.html, the backups are there for when you break things and need to revert to older versions. It sounds like either 1) For some reason only backups are getting saved and your original file is being deleted. 2) You are opening the backups and editing them (in this case it would increase the file length) Could you confirm which of the above is occurring? Also which web browser are you using?
