Well, people do "update" TiddlySnip, but the only thing that's actually changed is the max-version (not really hacking), which you can change yourself. I set mine to 999.* to avoid constantly having to change it now that FF is on a six-week cycle. Regarding turning tiddlers into e-mail see thread (1) and regarding creating tiddlers from e-mail see thread (2). You might also want to search for RSS feed solution on this group, that might help.
