There should be no need to change PageTemplate. The only problem with default TW is, that the existing PageTemplate + CSS wasn't designed for that usecase. So the connections between CSS, Page- View- EditTemplate and the core code are quite "strong" (not flexible) which makes it more work. But imo it can be done, with the help of some "fluid CSS framework" stuff.
