With my system ubuntu 12.04 FF17.0.1 it works quite well. (win7 FF17
same results)

My Firebug font settins show something like these
calculated settings for <code> element:

font-family     monospace
body    helvetica,arial,sans-serif

font-size       12.9667px
.viewer code    1.2em

color   #51534A
.viewer code    #51534A

line-height     18.15px
.viewer code    1.4em

so font-size is about 13 px. which fits well to the rest of my text,
which is 14.4px

So it may be your browser settings or installed / missing fonts in
your (or my) OS :)
