Yes, and it interesting the path that markdown editors are moving...
WysiwyM in fact - with an emphasis on have a rendering available - rather than 
editing the rendered version-- and highlight as a typing assist.

Examples would be markdown composer, byword and marked.

I also use LyX a lot and I like the way this separation helps me write - it is 
easier to focus on words -- and leave the formatting till later. And with LaTeX 
the formatting is always uniform and that is such a time saver compared to 
Word. At first this separation seemed like it could be a loss, but it really a 
gain.
So I think more people will come to this understanding too.
