I don't have a solution, but may be some hints, to improve the situation. It seems somewhere in the "save mechanism" a refresh command is triggered by the core, which resets the edit textarea to its default values.
The EditTemplate contains this line <div class='editor' macro='edit text'></div> if you change it to <div class='editor' macro='edit text 20'></div> You'll get a bigger default edit area.
