I'm fighting TagsTreePlugin as well.
[...]
Now TagsTree seems fine with one-word menu items that correspond to one
word tags, but when I try dealing with menu items such as "Male
Characters" under "Characters by Gender" or the locations under
"Characters By Location", things go haywire.
Or at least I haven't figured out how to do that.
As it turned out that was solved after experimentation.
A tag of
[[Characters by Gender]]
achieved the result. It seems a bit counter intuitive, why a link?
What if I used
[[Characters by Gender|CBG]]
Then there's the order of the menu items. What if I want "Male
Characters" to come before "Female Characters"?
This I haven't solved.
The documentation on how to use index and label fields is inadequate.
I've also found that I can nest the menus, so I can have a tiddler with
title "Males" and tag "mainmenu" and has content
<<tagsTree malecharacter "" 3 4 index label>>
