I think I've found a possible source of the bug, involving multi-select with list values containing spaces. All the irregularities you describe are a result of incorrectly encoding the space-separated, bracketed list that is used to store multiple values in a single tiddler field. It's a little odd that it only appears in "edit mode" usage... but there IS one innate difference in handling for "view mode": changes to the listbox are 'autosaved' without waiting for a "done" button to be pressed (since there is NO "done" button in view mode!). Thus, multi-select handling is done incrementally in view mode (each click actually updates the underlying field value immediately), while multi-selection in edit mode is only processed once "done" is pressed and all selected items are stored at once. I should have an updated plugin posted shortly.
