I understand that you are targeting for a full-blown, stable and flexible 
solution. At least for me, an intermediate quick and dirty solution like 
the following would already help a lot and bridge the time until we get the 
official solution:

- The possibility to use a list filter which is true iff current date is 
higher than a given field value in any format you like.

With this we could build lists of tasks which are due, or where the 
reminder date was reached.
