I noticed that the editors on tiddlywiki.com use a regular textarea

The clientserver edition includes the codemirror plugin, which provides an
enhanced text editor. If you want to revert to the usual browser textarea,
just delete the plugin $:/plugins/tiddlywiki/codemirror, and restart.

Hmm, was that because you were storing your system tiddlers in one of the
wiki folders within the TW5 repo? That isn't recommended.
