This took me a few minutes to figure out, so, for other beginners, I'm
going to write it out here.

Ton Gerner has made a button that will toggle the sidebar on and off,
available here:

http://tw5toolbar.tiddlyspot.com

It's in the tiddler called

'Toggle width/sidebar' button

(I used to know how to find the permalink for an individual tiddler, but
can't seem to remember at the moment)

To add the sidebar toggle button to your TW5, you need to drag and drop the
8 tiddlers listed in the tiddler 'Toggle width/sidebar' button in your own
TW.

Next, you need to put the button somewhere. You can put it in a Top Menu
(instructions for which are found in his toolbar TW on tiddlyspot, above).
Or you can (more easily) add it to your view and edit toolbars (the ones
that appear in the tiddlers themselves). All you have to do is tag this
System tiddler:

$:/_top-toggle-width-sidebar-button

with:

$:/tags/EditToolbar

and / or

$:/tags/ViewToolbar

Very handy for full screen mode, e.g for using preview button.
