Sounds like something is messing with your page source.

You get this sometimes with "helpful" security products -- either something
you have installed, or if you're at work it could be something your IT
department has added to their firewall/proxy setup.  To check that, try
disabling (temporarily) your local security programs, and if you're in a
corporate environment talk to your IT people.

It could also be malicious software messing with you, so also update all of
your security software and run a thorough scan.

The third option is some browser update has changed how the browser handles
unicode, or whether your wiki is considered "intranet" (which to IE means
"run in old-fashioned IE6 mode").  Check that by looking at the page
properties or something and see if your wiki is being rendered in
"compatibility mode" or something like that.
