Storing images "internally" (i.e., as tiddlers within the document), 
provides the ability to share a standalone, single-file version of TW5.  As 
you've noted, this can include storage of very large images.  However, I 
believe that the primary use-case of internally stored images is for 
*small* images used as embedded icons, logos, and textures for CSS styling.
