The problem here is that HTML elements are valid wikitext, and the email
addresses look enough like HTML elements to confuse the parser. BJ and
whatever have suggested the two recommended workarounds.

There is another possibility for the future: in this particular case, we
could add a new wiki text parse rule that recognises email addresses
(including those delimited by angle brackets), and automatically converts
them into mailto: links.
