Hi Stef You would indeed have to buy some webspace to run TW as a server. Or you might be able to just use an old PC in the closet at home - or a raspberry pi.
If you're not ready for Node.js I'd suggest just continuing with the standalone edition; the Node.js configuration will be there for you when you're ready to upgrade. I do hope at some point to be able to work on a Dropbox plugin for TW5. With their JS API it should be possible to do some of the tiddler sharing stuff you're talking about. Best wishes Jeremy.
