Well, there are people who are really into Islam and they read the holy books and act literally accordingly. To understand what is really going on I have some years ago bought some of the books: a.o. The "Sirat Rasul Allah", the biography of Mohammed by Ibn Ishaq and "the Reliance of the Traveller" by a.o. Noah Ha Mim Keller. When you read this stuff you are not going to be very happy. A friend of mine was a Professor of Arabic Studies at the Utrecht University and he taught me a thing or two too. Unfortunaly he recently died at 72 yoa.
