I wouldn't use outdated versions for new projects. You'll probably create maintenance problems for yourself and the community. Older versions may lack features and contain bugs, that everyone thinks are fixed already. If those bugs pop up again, they may create confusion and "burn" time, that could be better used to create new stuff. ... just some thoughts.
