Hi Tony, I agree with you about editing long text, it will be a good with standard text (not transclude and other TW tricks).
I've see in this groups another approach, that opening a new window tiddler to contribute in edit mode, and see regular result on river story. Or you have Matt plugin to edit close to the river. But it's steal difficult with wikitext format or own macro code sometimes. I'll love to see an edit mode but directly in render mode, like some JS script on html5. It will not work with transclude, just for adding/delete text (and basic like bold) in the current tiddler.
