If there is no macro or internal macro, I would suggest below macro
\define abbr(term:"")
<$set name="abbreviation" value={{abbreviation-dictionary##$term$}}
emptyValue="Term not found">
<abbr title=<<abbreviation>> >$term$</abbr>
</$set>
\end
In that the abbreviation-dictionary is the dictionary tiddler! If macro
cannot find the term it returns a message: Term not found
