MJM, I stuck with TWC for some time, in fact still maintain my years old TWC in TiddlyDesktop, however there came a time I wanted to explore new possibilities and just started to learn TW5 as a side hobby, however once I had a more basic understanding of TW5 I started to use it more and jumped to a new "core" tiddlywiki built by me based on TW5 a few weeks ago.
You could say we can "Walk and Chew gum at the same time" and I would always suggest "no need for change for changes sake", nor would I say you should remain in comfortable ignorance when new opportunities are out their for the adventurous. In my view the new version and supporting plugins, servers and savers open a number of substantial areas to TiddlyWiki including mobile first, multi-user, online hosting and much more so I do not regret my move, only that it it took more time than necessary, but TW5 is starting to reach a higher maturity level now. Internally TiddlyWiki also has a number of improvements over TWC, especially in the use of custom fields, visualisation maths and more.
