Thank you. Uninstalling the *enabled by default* CodeMirror plugin on the pre-release TiddlyWiki <https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease/>, and then saving it, and reloading the file, fixed the issue. The edit box once again has a text entry area just like 5.1.17 - perfect !
