I learnt the "split[
]" trick several years ago from someone, possibly PMario.
Trim seems to work, yes.
Also, there should be a removal of blanks. So result is:
<$list filter="""[{mytid}split[
]trim[]prefix[!]splitregexp[!]!is[blank]]""">
</$list>
