Tom I presume you are using the standard tiddler editor?.
If you use an edit-text widget in the current tiddler you can loose focus on the edit field without a special design approach. I find it hard to imagine how this is happening for you. Perhaps try a fresh wiki or previous version to diagnose this. Test other notebook apps or text fields to see if its the phone or wiki.
