That plugin is very much in need of a maintainer, as I currently don't
have the time to take proper care of it. (Also, I'd probably do a lot
different these days, as I know much more now than I did a year ago.)

That's a very complex problem, and I don't think there's a good
automated solution.
Generally speaking, using hijacking instead of overriding is more
future-proof - though not always possible.
