Alright, you've convinced me that Your Way is, at the very least, 
acceptable.

What might help, perhaps, is your suggestion of factoring out some of 
the private methods into a util module.
That would make the Store class's "table of contents" a bit more 
manageable and allow reuse without having to subclass the text store.
