Note that the ratings display is in the middle column of the page, but not part of the tiddler area. I created another test case by commenting out the ratings area from the pageTemplate. Then I fired up Safari's Web inspector. Your ratings display seems to be covering up the tiddlerBar div (with the close boxes and tabs) or perhaps pushing it upward Safari shows tiddlerBar as a very thin line. That may explain the disappearance of the default tiddlers. The backstage button is a total mystery.
