I like this approach! It seems far simpler and less error prone and it works very well with the tree plugin.
I am however having issues figuring out where I would put the needed if statement for the actual Tiddler display title though. It seems like I could be able to add some inline JavaScript to the viewTemplate but inline JavaScript doesn't seem to work in the viewTemplate...?
