Ok, so I think I can do without inline javascript, I just have to program using
TW5 internals which are also amazing. Here is my next attempt but again I have
a problem. It only time stamps the first time I hit the button. If I close the
popup and hit it again, it shows the original time only. If anyone has any
other suggestions for a button that opens up anything that has a time stamp?

<span title="Time Stamp"><$button popup="$:/SamplePopupState"
class="btn-invisible">{{$:/images/clock-button}}</$button></span>
<$reveal type="popup" position="right" state="$:/SamplePopupState">
<div class="tw-drop-down">

<$view field=modified format="date" template="hh12:0mm:0ss AM"/>

</div>
</$reveal>
