Hi Jed,
you are absolutely correct. Normally there is a RootWidget[1] as well as
navigator widgets and a few others around the whole thing that handle
quite a few things.
So to have those things work, either wrap your actions in them, or try
to catch the message and forward it to the real tree in some meaningful
way. I however do not
know the specific details of everything that is involved, so in certain
cases, you will probably have to dig into the TW source code to see what
handles what.
(Also note that your "real tree" could actually be a very unreal tree in
a nodejs process)

I think that this, and having to use the importvariables widget to get
the macros to work, has something to do with the container the widget
is rendered inside of. I have no idea what if that is actually the
case or what to do about it.
