I couldn't find this asked directly in the forum. Can someone point me to
information on how to (perhaps via a plugin) to auto-populate a custom
field value on every tiddler when the tiddler is edited+saved?

My use case is that I want to share a TW privately with some technically
un-savvy folks who may make simple edits. I track changes to the wiki on a
separate VCS. The idea is that when they make an edit from their browser, I
can auto-populate an author field which will indicate the most recent
edit's author.

A possible mechanism is the th-saving-tiddler hook, but that is not enough,
because there is no client information in the hook, so the field must be
populated at edit/submission time.

I'm also open to other suggestions of achieving this (staying within the
TW5 ecosystem). The TW5-Bob discussion seems relevant but I wasn't able to
get the SecureWikiServer working within an hour, so auto-populating a
localStorage value seems like a simpler alternative.

Thanks!
