I am in the process of modifying build-xorg to build the new viewer. Then, I will do some performance analysis on it to figure out where we stand in that regard.
AFAIC, we can remove the old viewer from trunk anytime you're ready, and I think once I'm done with the build-xorg mods that we should be able to remove autotools as well.
