I was uncomfortable with libssh because, under the hood, it's going to require
OpenSSL. TigerVNC is already difficult to build and has really become more the
province of O/S distributors because of its onerous build requirements. I'm the
guy who used to generate project binaries, and yet I had difficulty building
the code in trunk. Using OpenSSL isn't such a big deal it you're releasing
TigerVNC for a specific platform and can take advantage of the system
libraries. But it creates difficulties when trying to create a cross-platform
version of TigerVNC. But given that I'm no longer with the project and no
longer generating cross-platform project binaries, it really doesn't matter to
me anymore what you guys do. I'm just offering up the suggestion that adding a
dependency on libssh may make the build even more onerous and further turn off
potential contributors. Given that Cendio is the only active developer, the
only things that get tested are things they care about, so libssh functionality
would have to be maintained by someone else.
Personally, I prefer -via calling an external SSH executable on Un*x and
Windows, and that's the route we're taking with TurboVNC. We supply a build of
PLink with the vncviewer executable, but the feature (once completed) will
allow you to override that with, for instance, Cygwin OpenSSH.
